Cooking with a crockpot can make it easy to have dinner waiting when you come home. By filling up the crockpot before you leave for work or school in the morning, you can be greeted by the delicious scent of dinner when you walk in the door at the end of the day.

Tips for Using Your Crockpot

There are a few tips that will help your crockpot meals turn out perfect every time. First, never overfill the crockpot. Make sure when you are filling it up that the pot is between half and three-quarters full. Too full, and your food will not cook enough. If the pot is too empty, the food will cook too quickly and you will come home to a dinner that is overdone.

If you are using fresh vegetables, put them on the bottom. They will take longer to cook than your meat. This is a bit hard to believe, but it is true. If you are using frozen vegetables, place them on top of your meat, since they will cook faster.

You may want to try browning your meat before placing it in the crockpot. This renders fat and caramelizes the natural sugars in the meat, creating a delicious flavor. If you wish to deglaze the pan afterwards with broth, water, or wine, you can add these tasty drippings to your crockpot so you can enjoy them later. Removing extra fat and skin will also help your meat cook better.

Tender ingredients like tomatoes, mushrooms, and dairy products should be added the last 30 to 45 minutes of cooking. Make sure the temperature is on low for dairy products to keep them from curdling. If you are adding thickeners like cornstarch, it should be added in the last hour with the temperature on high to activate their thickening qualities. Rice and pasta should be added during the last 45 minutes so they do not get too mushy.

While cooking, try not to remove the lid. If you need to add more ingredients, add them all at once if possible to reduce losing heat from the crockpot. Every time you lift the lid, add another half hour to your cooking time.

Meals You Can Make in the Crockpot

These easy tips can help make your crockpot useful and versatile. You can make almost anything in the crockpot. Pulled pork with barbecue sauce is easy in the crockpot, as is Asian chicken. Stew and chili are old standbys for the crockpot, as is chicken soup. Vegetable dishes like creamed corn with cream cheese is delicious for a side dish.

Did you know you could even bake in your crockpot? It is true! Cakes, breads, and other baked desserts are simple to make in your crockpot. All you need is an insert pan. Crockpot cookery is easy and versatile. It can serve you well several nights a week.

In today's fast past busy lifestyle a crockpot can help give you back some of your free time and make dinner time much more enjoyable for the working cook of the family. The crockpot is also the perfect tool for summertime cooking as it gets you out of the hot kitchen and out enjoying the extra free time you will find.

Some outdoor cooks prefer barbecue while others prefer the slower method of smoking. While both methods have their advantages, many swear by the distinct flavor advantages of smoker cooking. While cooking with heated smoke will take considerably longer than with straight heat, it is a more flavorful way of cooking.

Typically, smoker cooking has an offset fire chamber, which provides a means of the heat and smoke from the burner to pass over and through the meat. The flame itself never comes into contact with the food and therefore will not burn it. Neither will the oils and juices that drip from the cooking meat ignite short bursts of flame that can cause flare ups and scorched food.

The type of wood used in smoker cooking also helps determine the flavor with most people using hickory to provide a heavy smoky flavor to the meat. Apple and pecan wood is sometimes added to lighten the wood smoke flavor and wood from fruit trees will make for a slightly sweeter flavor.

Smoker Cooking Not For The Impatient

When smoker cooking it must be realized that this type of cooking cannot be hurried. It is going to take time to properly cook your food in a smoker. On average, depending on the cut of your meat and temperature at which you maintain the grill, smoker cooking a four-pound piece of meat will take over two hours. By comparison, the same size slab on a conventional grill will take less than an hour.

There is no limit to the types of meat you can cook in a smoker, beef, pork, poultry and fish and there are many recipes available to offer instruction on how to prepare them all. Some of the more popular meats for smoker cooking are spare ribs, large fish fillets as well as beef briskets. A four pound whole chicken will take about four hours to be thoroughly cooked in a smoker. The best way to tell if the chicken is done is to insert a thermometer into the thick part of the bird without touching any bones and making sure it reads 165 degrees.

You can rub the chicken or other meat with spices to prepare it for smoker cooking and add other sauces during and after. If you a smoker cooking without an automatic turning device, you will need to turn it occasionally to ensure even cooking and browning.

Barbecuing, a traditional cooking process in use for centuries is a great way to enjoy tasty meals without heating up your kitchen in the hot summer months. It is a great way to gather friends and family and enjoy time together. In some areas, the term barbecuing is reserved for a slow low-heat cooking process that operates at about 220°F and the term grilling is used for a fast high-heat cooking process. The best temperature for barbecuing is between 200F and 300F.

Meat — There are three basic qualities used to identify barbecue: the sauce, the type of meat and the type of wood used to smoke and cook the meat. The meats usually used in barbecuing are tougher cuts of meat, such as the beef brisket, or pork ribs. These meats benefit from the long, slow cooking process, becoming so tender that they will just fall off the bone. Since the cooking process is slower, and the heat not as high as grilling, barbecue sauce can be brushed onto the meat through out the cooking process, forming a delicious glaze on the outside of the meat.

Take time to marinate: Some research has shown that ingredients such as vinegar in marinades can actually protect the meat and reduce the chances of carcinogenic compounds forming.

Sauce — Sauces, marinades and rubs are popular cooking ideas when barbecuing. There are a wide variety of sauces and glazes that can be made. BBQ sauce is generally a basic mixture of tomatoes, sugar and vinegar. A sauce often includes sugar, honey or preserves, which can cause the sauce to burn when cooking; a suggestion is to brush your sauce on in the last five to ten minutes of cooking when cooking at higher temperatures. Barbecue cooks have individual preferences about the proper meats and sauces to use, which differ from region to region. The advantage of a rub is that it will last in a shaker for months, while a marinade or sauce should be used the day it is made.

Wood — The type of wood you use is very important. The most popular barbecue woods are hickory, oak, mesquite and fruit woods such as apple, pear, pecan and alder. Wood is the fuel that adds the most flavor to grilled meats. Barbecuing is traditionally done with hickory or mesquite wood, which gives a nice smoke flavor to the food. Wood is place in a firebox which is usually off to one side of the cooking chamber. The cooking chamber fills with smoke, giving the food its characteristic smoked flavor, which varies depending on the type of wood that is used for the fuel. Damp wood chips added to the fire add a delicious smoky flavor to meat.

Tips — Don't cook too hot – keep grill heat low, Turn food frequently, Don’t overcook food, Don’t precook food, Use thinner cuts of meat, Use a meat thermometer, Don't poke your meat with a fork or ever press meat with a spatula to speed up cooking.

You want to remove the meat from the grill when it's just a bit underdone. The meat will continue to cook, and more significantly, the juices, left undisturbed and unmolested, will redistribute through the resting meat in a natural and rewarding way. Failing to rest the meat after grilling is the number one rookie mistake-and its consequences are enormous.

Barbecuing is cooking by using indirect heat at low temperatures and long cooking times. Before you start, however, be forewarned – barbecuing is a process that takes time and patience to be done correctly. It takes time to master the methods and techniques to create the perfect barbecue. While most folks actually grill in the summer, give barbecuing a try; it is a great American pastime.

When cooked, a fork can easily poke through the skin, and the flesh will easily separate into long strands with a fork. The average 4 pound squash will give you about five cups of flesh. Use the «spaghetti» right away, or place in freezer bags in the freezer for use at another meal.

These best five ways to cook spaghetti squash are in the order of cooking time.If you have all day, set the crock pot on, or if you like that fresh baked smell to fill the house, bake it in the oven. If you just want to get it done and start eating as fast as you can, I would suggest the microwave. Try out all the different ways and see what you like best!

#1 — In the Crock Pot — Pick a squash that can fit in your crock pot whole. Pole holes through the shell with a fork, and place in the crock pot. Add a couple of cups of water, and cook on low for 8-9 hours or until fork pokes through skin easily.

#2 — In the Oven, Whole — Poke holes in the skin several times with a fork. Place the entire squash in the oven. Cook at 375F for about 1 hour, or until soft.

#3 — Boil in a Pot — Find a pot big enough to hold your squash. Fill with enough water to cover the whole squash and set to boil. When the water is boiling, add the squash and cook 20-30 minutes until fork pokes through skin easily.

#4 — In the Oven, Halved — Cut the squash in half lengthwise, and scoop out the seeds. Place open sides down onto a baking sheet and place in the oven. Cook at 375F for 20-30 minutes or until skin is easily poked with a fork.

#5 — Microwave in a Dish — Cut the squash in half lengthwise, and scoop out the seeds. Place squash in a microwaveable dish with the open side up. Add a few cups of water, and cover with saran wrap. Cook for 10-12 minutes. Let it sit for 5 minutes covered, then test to see if it is done, and cook longer if needed.

I found that slicing the squash in half and scooping out the seeds first, before it was cooked was easier then scooping out the seeds after, and trying to sort out the flesh from the seeds when cooked together.

Here are some good spaghetti squash recipes to use cooked squash.

Spaghetti Squash Recipe with Cheese

This is also a really quick dinner especially if squash is cooked ahead of time. If you like cheese, and squash this will quickly become a favorite dish!

1 large spaghetti squash cooked and prepared.
¼ cup Parmesan Cheese
½ cup Mozzarella Cheese, grated
1 cup tomatoes, chopped
1/3 cup chopped fresh parsley

Mix all ingredients in microwave safe dish or oven safe dish. Microwave for 2-5 minutes, or heat in oven for 5-8 minutes until all ingredients are hot and cheese is melted.

Serve.

Spaghetti Squash Bake Recipe

It is so quick and easy to put together. Bake the squash ahead of time, then throw the ingredients together, and serve to the table only 10 minutes later. Makes a great lunch or dinner! Or use the leftovers for a snack!

¼ cup chicken broth
1 cup sliced mushrooms
2 cups spinach
½ fresh tomato chopped
1 clove garlic minced
1 cup spaghetti squash cooked and prepared
¼ teaspoon pepper
¼ teaspoon basil
1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes
¼ cup grated cheese

Preheat oven to 350F.

In a bowl, mix together all the ingredients except cheese. Pour into a casserole dish. Sprinkle with cheese. Bake in the oven for 10 minutes or until heated through.

Serve. (Per Serving — 3.3 g carbohydrates) (serves 6)

Layered Spaghetti Squash Recipe

Preparing the squash then layering in individual bowls or a large family size glass bowl creates an interesting look and gets the taste buds going, before even lifting the fork to eat.

1 large spaghetti squash cooked and prepared
1 cup ricotta cheese
¾ pound ground meat (your choice)
¾ cups mozzarella cheese
1 ½ cups spaghetti sauce
¼ cup parmesan cheese

Cook squash. Cook meat. Heat ricotta cheese in microwave. Heat up spaghetti sauce.

Layer in a large bowl, or in individual bowls, squash, ricotta cheese, meat, mozzarella cheese, spaghetti sauce, then parmesan cheese.

Serve. (Per Serving 14 g carbohydrates, 6.6 g fiber) (serves 6)

Basic Spaghetti Squash Recipe

This is a good starting point. It is a place to get ideas, and think of new things to add to your squash. All you need is:

Flesh from 1 large spaghetti squash, (about 5 cups)
Miscellaneous ingredients of your choice. Ideas are below.

After cooking and preparing the squash start pulling out all the ingredients you like or feel like adding today, and mix it all together, and serve warm.

This can be any amount to your taste any of the following:
Garlic, salt, pepper and other herbs and spices that you like, fennel, dill, curry, red pepper flakes
Meat choices are endless, ground beef, ground turkey, diced chicken, pork strips
For cheeses there is Parmesan, Feta, Cheddar, mozzarella, blue
Vegetable choices are also endless, zucchini, beans, tomatoes, spinach, Swiss chard, broccoli, peppers

If you are adding tomato sauce, put it on at the end as a garnish. This will prevent the squash from becoming mushy.

Have fun, enjoy and try new things!

International cooking usually leaves you slaving over a hot stove or running for the phone book to search for the closest take out place. But with a crock pot and a couple of simplified recipes, you can cook to your heart's content for a taste that's a world away.

No amount of reading and re-reading the instructions for Kung Pow Chicken in your International Foods cook book is going to prepare you for what's in store, especially if you've never attempted Kung Pow Chicken or any other type of Asian or other international dish. The same goes for all different types of international foods. You have to get used to using different types of seasonings like cumin, coriander and for many dishes, kosher sea salt-you'll probably be wondering «whatinthewhonow» does that mean?

Especially if you are a beginning cook-and many times, even if you're not-you need to choose cooking options that are within your grasp. But that doesn't mean you're stuck with Mac & Cheese or grilled cheese sandwiches-you know that's what you're cooking, don't lie. You simply have to be more innovative about «how» you cook your foods.

Every cook should have a large brigade of cooking utensils and cooking appliances. Amongst this army of cookware you should always be able to easily locate a well maintained crock pot. Crock pot cooking is one of the easiest ways to get around the difficult recipes you'll find in cook books. Not only are crock pot recipes simplified for the crock pot way of life, but they are also easily accessible in crock pot recipe books and all over the internet-there are hundreds of web sites dedicated to crock pot recipes and crock pot cooking and your favorite search engine can open the doors to crock pot recipe bliss if you let it.

Crock pot cooking is known for having hundreds of easy crock pot beef recipes and crock pot pork recipes, many of which are international dishes that could be cooked over the stove, slaved over even...but don't have to be. You can even make delicious crock pot pasta recipes that you'd expect to find only at an Italian restaurant. And it doesn't end there. Crock pot dessert recipes also mimic the hard-to-make in the oven or over the stove top recipes that come from the pros at French restaurants all over the world.

Never forget that the basic principle of crock pot cooking is to make food that tastes as if it were professionally prepared and tastes as if you spent hours preparing it. The fact that you threw the ingredients in the crock pot, turned it to high and walked away for five hours is always supposed to be your little secret.

Not to mention the leftovers. If you're a fan of ordering in from a great take-out place with your favorite international dishes, then you'll love cooking for yourself at home with easy crock pot recipes. Not only will you save money making the exact same dish, but you'll be able to keep tons of leftovers that you can even freeze for a later date. And you'll be able to choose exactly what is and what isn't in your food. You can't beat that.

a cast iron pot—mainly a dish called “hominy” prepared from corn, vegetables and salt-cured pork. Other meats and vegetables were consumed with this main dish. Generally, the wife cooked porridges and soups in the pot.

The middle class were a little better, but even they were divided into lower middle class and upper middle class. While it was left to the ladies to attend to the cooking in lower middle class families, slaves could take over in the upper middle class households. On special days, both tried to keep up with the gentry.

Only next to the governor in status, the gentry indulged in expensive colonial cooking. The cooking more or less followed English traditions, with every meal combining both sweets and meats. They could afford to keep slave cooks. These cooks were quite skilled in spite of having less formal training. Not to be compared to the governor’s cooks, yet these slaves were held in high esteem and paid very well. In fact, a few slaves even became free via their cooking skills!

The best colonial cooking could be seen at the governor’s household. The kitchen was equipped with an eight-day clock, a spit jack, and plenty of copper pots. European cooks with professional training and trained apprenticeships were in charge as the principal cooks, and received princely sums for their efforts. No cook in the colonies could compare with them. Thus, the governor could afford to employ several cooks and sample different cuisines, though the dishes had a distinct French flavor.
